‘What about some see-through underwear and tit-tape?’

TENWhen someone tells you they’ve made a full outfit out of cardboard you’re probably expecting some sort of box costume…

I’ve just got back from a hectic day at the Manchester School of Art Cardboard Catwalk show! The show has been running for 15 years with foundation students making all sorts of amazing costumes and putting on hundreds of performances.

This year we were each given an artist to inspire us to make a wearable costume, a puppet or some form of sculpture. Although the rule that the piece had to be made from cardboard seemed a bit limiting, some of the pieces created looked far from anything simple!

Our groups artist was Kazimir Malevich, an artist who is so varied it was difficult for us to pick a topic to focus our work on! We eventually settled on his suprematism work, a movement all about creating forms from geometric shapes.

We tried many many different options to get our little pastel geometric shapes to stay put, including a contraption of invisible fishing wire which looked truly beautiful on the dress form, and then promptly fell apart when we tried to get it onto our model.

In the end we ended up with this cage structure. The general structure was done fantastically by Robyn Candice in our group who somehow managed to make the cardboard look like something aesthetically pleasing! After the geometric fishing wire shape contortion failed to look good we decided to simply attach some of the smaller shapes onto the structure themselves, and it ended up looking great!

My commendations go out to Greta Byrne, who was also in our group but also had the guts to model our costume for us. Anybody who can get up on stage wearing nothing but some sticky tape to cover her dignity deserves a round of applause! Even when the music went wrong she still rocked the show and did a great performance!

Yes! It is a calculator with legs!

Some of the other groups work was truly awe inspiring. From a giant pair of ballet shoes, to a teddy bear exploding from a box, to a giant goat with fully moving limbs (some real, some not!)

I’m really sad that the whole project is over now, I had so much fun working in this group and making this piece, but I have to say I am looking forward to a week off of relaxing now, and even my first visit home in a month!
